A roof that lasts 30 years in some parts of the country might give you 18 around the Memphis metro. It's not because the materials are different. It's because Tennessee weather is harder on roofs than most people realize. Here's what's actually happening up there over your head.
Summer Heat
Memphis summers regularly hit 95 degrees, and on a sunny roof the surface temperature can climb past 150 degrees. That kind of heat dries out asphalt shingles, makes them brittle, and shortens their lifespan. Dark roofs in Cordova get hit even harder than light-colored ones. Proper attic ventilation is the main defense — without it, the heat builds up and basically cooks the shingles from below as well as above.
Humidity
The Memphis area stays humid most of the year, and humidity gets into anywhere it can find a path. Under flashing. Into individual nail holes. Around pipe boots. It accelerates rot in any wood that's not perfectly sealed, and it shortens the life of metal flashing too. This is one of the main reasons proper installation matters so much around here. Cutting corners on flashing or underlayment in a humid climate shows up as problems within a few years.
Spring Storms
Tennessee spring brings hail, high winds, and sometimes tornadoes. Hail damage is the most common problem we see in Cordova — even small hail can crack shingles and knock off the protective granules. The damage isn't always obvious from the ground, but it shortens the roof's life significantly. We've inspected plenty of Memphis-metro roofs that looked fine from the driveway but were full of hail bruises up close.
Winter Freeze-Thaw
The Memphis metro doesn't get bitter cold like up north, but it cycles above and below freezing all winter long. Water gets into small cracks during the day, freezes overnight, and expands. Then it thaws the next day. Over and over.
This is what turns small roof problems into big ones. A tiny gap around a vent boot becomes a quarter-inch crack in three winters. It's also the reason ice and water shield matters even in places that don't get much snow — the freeze-thaw damage is often worse than actual snow load.
What This Means for Your Cordova Roof
Roofs in the Memphis metro need a little more attention than roofs in milder climates. Yearly inspections, prompt repairs of any small issues, and keeping gutters clean all add up to years of additional roof life.

What You Can Do
Get your roof looked at every year, especially after storm season. Clean your gutters at least twice a year. Don't ignore small leaks — they always get bigger. And when you do need work done, hire a roofer who actually understands Tennessee weather and what it does to roofing materials.
